Graduate Record Examination

English Teacher

Purpose

  • Examines a test-taker's preparedness for graduate-level coursework in a variety of subjects, including business, engineering, science, and the humanities.

Test Sections

  • uses verbal reasoning to evaluate, analyze, and interpret textual content.

  • Quantitative reasoning is used to assess mathematical proficiency in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data processing.

  • Essay responses are used to assess writing skills and critical thinking in analytical writing.

Scoring

  • Scored in one-point increments from 130 to 170 on a scale for both the verbal and quantitative sections.

  • Half-point increments from 0 to 6 are used to score analytical writing.

Test Format

  • Computer-Based Test: Given at approved testing locations across the world using a computer.

  • Adaptive Testing: A computer-adaptive format modifies the level of difficulty of questions according to past answers.

Frequency and Registration

  • Test Availability: Available all year round in different parts of the world.

  • Registration: Involves paying a registration fee and reserving a test date in advance.

Preparation

  • Official Study Materials: Examinees can access official practice examinations, study guides, and strategies from test administrator ETS.

  • Additional Resources: Several books, online courses, and practice tools are offered to aid in the preparation process.

Use in Graduate Admissions

  • Graduate Programs: Many business and graduate institutions across the world need these or accept them as a condition of admittance.

  • Admissions requirements: An applicant's chances of succeeding in graduate school are assessed based on their GRE scores as well as other application materials.

Score Reporting

  • Unofficial Scores: The verbal and quantitative portions of the test are provided right away.

  • Ten to fifteen days after the test date, official scores are sent to universities that have been granted approval.
